Forum login repeatedly time out

Post by jvierra » Wed Mar 13, 2013 11:46 am

I am repeatedly timed out during typing a response. If the response takes more that 60 seconds (due to a phone call or other) it will timeout and loose all data entry. It aslo times out if typing takes longer than 60 seconds.

Even checking the 'automatically log me ion' selectiopn does not maintain a login.

On an initial login the login screen does not get detected as a username/password by IE and does not have the extra checkboxes.

We have not set any time limits on users. I'm afraid I need to ask a few questions in order to fully investigate this matter.

Is this a new problem that you have just begun to experience or has this been happening every time you have used the forum?

Is it machine specific? If yes, what OS and Version are you using on the machine which logs you out?

Is it browser specific? If yes, what Browser and Version logs you out?

Do you have javascript and cookies enabled in your browser?

Thanks!

Hi June -
  • 1. Happens on XP IE8 and Windows 8 IE 10
    2. After initial login and begin reply I get a login challenge when I 'Submit' a reply. After logging in all text for the reply is lost.
    3. This happens when the reply takes more than 60 seconds and seems to not happen on short replies.
    4. After the second login this does not seem to happen again.
    5. JavaScript and Cookies are enabled.
    6. THis has happened since that last time the login was fixed. The login will now persisit across browser sessions but only one machine will be allowed to persist. If I switch machines the login needs to be resntered. On going back to the original machine the login is lost agan. This appears to be due to server side login persistence or 'cookieless' sessions. Do you have all 'virtual dirs'/sites on the server set the same way?

I think the issue may be incorrect detection of browser. Maybe your browsercaps files are out-of-date.

On IE8 and later setting 'compatible view' helps to some degree. I will et you know how the new setting helps.

Are you using an old version of PHP and PHPBoard?

We are running the latest version of phpBB (3.0.11) and PHP Version 5.3.20.

It really shouldn't be timing you out, regardless of the number of machines you are logged-in on. But - out of curiosity, if you are only logged-in on one machine, do you still get logged out?

I'm checking on a number of possibilities and will let you know if I make any progress.

in the mean time, do let me know if changing the setting on IE8 helps at all.

More info:

IE10 compatibility view seems to fix the issue on IE10 but the same fix does not work on IE8. The login screen is one without option boxes.

IE9 also does not work in compatibility view.

So far I have tried XP, WS2003, Windows 7 all failed. Windows 8 is the only OS that succeeded and IE10 the only browser.

I suspect that PHP is up to date but the broswercaps fiels are an optional update on many sites., They are updated globally I believe but do not overwrite site specifc files as this would break any modifications that may have been added.

I am not sure where PHP stuffs these. It depends on the OS version I believe.

I am still looking in to this issue. We have tried to replicate it to no avail. I want to assure that I have not given up, but would like you to try the following on both machines that give you trouble.

1. Log out.
2. Clear your cookies. (You don't have to clear them all, just the ones related to our forum - they will have a prefix of phpbb3_dv5in.)
3. Quit the browser.
4. Relaunch the browser and then log in again.

I have deletred all sapine and board cookies and verified that they have been dleted and recreated. The issue does n ot change.

This is the page I am betting when accessing board via www.scriptinganswers.com

http://www.sapien.com/auth/forums/index ... inganswers

That link has the login page after I click login on menu.

scriptinganswers, com was not redirecting to the proper URL. That issue has been addressed. Thanks for finding that! However - I do not think that the redirect was the cause of your issue and will continue to investigate.
