WMICacheBuilder.exe windows during installation/update

Post by FrankAndrew »

Product, version and build: WMI Explorer 2019, 2.2.18
32 or 64 bit version of product: 64bit
Operating system: Windows 7 Enterprise
32 or 64 bit OS: 64bit

During the installation/update of the WMIExplorer a new window/dialog is appearing.
It is the WMICacheBuilder.exe console window/dialog.
It is also showing up during a /quiet Installation.

I am not sure that this is what you want to happen.
It IS nice to know why the installation/update is taking longer than it used to take.
(building the LDAP cache)
You are already displaying the "Building WMI Cache..." message here:

It operates as desired. Does this pose any kind of problem?

Hi Alex,
No this does not pose a problem, it was just unexpected, this window/dialog was not visible before. I first saw it with the version 2.2.80. Being as it does take sometime caching the LDAP data it is not bad that we can see what it is doing.
It would be nice though if it were hidden or minimized during the silent/quiet Installation but it is not a problem.
You have at least a confirmation that it is working as desired and that someone noticed the change. :)

:) Thanks. The change is due to users not wanting to run WMI Explorer elevated by default. By building the cache during install, which is elevated, you can now browse and search the the full WMI database structure without running elevated. Querying some classes of course still requires elevation.

I find that an excellent inprovement.
I also had the desire for those improvements but I never communicated it to you guys.
Nice to see that there are others that think the same way.
And being as it takes sometime to build the cache it is OK that we can see what it is doing.
If you guys can get it to hide during the silent/quiet installtion then it is perfect! :D
