I'm running into this when using a repository for Word docs. If I work on a document long enough I end up with a copy of the temp file, like ~$L My Doc.docx. VR shows a status of no local copy found when I close the doc. This is to be expected. There was a temp file but not there's not. Is this a situation where I would need to define a file exclusion to ignore the temp files?

Yeah, you could do that. But you can just ignore it. Hit refresh to get rid of the file that no longer exists.
As there is no file system change notification for deleted files I guess I will need to add a timer.

Actually I found that it lists hidden files. It shouldn't do that, so the next build will just ignore hidden files and thereby also not list office temporary files.
