Probably works in the ISE because $File is contaminated from
something else but not initialized in the script.

The VM detection is not entirely foolproof, so it might sometimes think a physical machine is a VM and vice versa. That is usually not a big deal. Depends on what level of support. Updates and security patches: Current version only Help, assistance with installation and configuration: Usually 2 years back OS Compatibility assistance: usually 2 years back Retrieval of software installers, licensing information: 5 years (in most cases much longer)

No, not yet. Microsoft dragged their feet releasing a functioning SDK for PowerShell Core.
There is no specified date at this time. As PowerShell 7 will become a mainstream Windows component again, it will make things 'easier'.
