What can you expect from our class:
The content is delivered primarily using PowerShell code. We discuss concepts, watch the concepts in action and then allow the class to utilize each concept in a lab environment or as a class exercise with the instructor.
What is Windows PowerShell?
This chapter focuses on getting the class in the test environment. Once in we will discover the different features of PowerShell on various operating systems and PowerShell versions to help the class understand what they can do with PowerShell in their respective environments. We will also deploy PowerShell 7 along with PowerShell Studio.
Making Mistakes and Getting Help
PowerShell is built for automation. However, mistakes happen. This lesson focuses on making mistakes, preventing them, and how to recover quickly from them. We will also focus on how to ask for and receive help from PowerShell. We will also learn how to find what PowerShell commands are available for specific technologies such as Exchange and SharePoint (note, we will not be working with Exchange or SharePoint).
The PowerShell Pipeline
The PowerShell pipeline provides an environment that greatly reduces the need for coding. We will learn how the pipeline works by first learning about a concept called objects. Once we know how to work with objects, we will utilize the PowerShell pipeline to quickly achieve our goals.
Hunting for Viruses with PowerShell Providers
Using a real-world example of a virus infection, we will utilize common skills and knowledge to hunt down a virus using PowerShell Providers. This will allow IT Professions to modify the registry on nodes across an entire network.
Common Information Model (CIM)
All PowerShell cmdlets pull their information for the Windows Management Instrumentation or Common Information Model library. We will learn how to do the same and pull detailed information from all of our nodes that is not available in the PowerShell cmdlets. This will allow us to create powerful tools that are custom to our environments.
IT Networks can be just a few machines to hundreds of thousands of nodes. In this module, we will look at how to utilize PowerShell remoting to effectively execute commands on hundreds of nodes at the same time. We will also look at security and Just Enough Administration.
We will look at PowerShell's ability to perform many tasks on many different nodes at the same time with background and schedule jobs. This will allow IT Professionals to execute the same code at the same time on multiple nodes. We will also look at how to enable this functionality in a PowerShell 7 environment to help maintain compatibility with your existing automation solutions.
How we store our data is important. We will look at a variety of ways to store both simple and complex data. We will also learn how to build our own customized objects.
Writing PowerShell Scripts and Commands
This completely hands on exercise with the instructor will take attendees through the basics of script development. We will also build a PowerShell cmdlet and a fully auto loading PowerShell module.
Making Your Life Easier
This chapter will look at developing code to quantify your time savings with PowerShell and introduce SAPIEN PowerShell Studio. We will look at some of the advanced features of PowerShell Studio to help us in our coding and also build a graphical front end for our PowerShell code.
Desired State Configuration
We will explore the world of Desired State Configuration and ways to apply it to configure our nodes. We will configure some of our servers with DSC and watch how DSC can prevent a drift in our configurations.
Do I need to bring my laptop?
Please be sure to pack your laptop, along with any cables or docks you may need. We will be providing one additional monitor for each student, that comes with a standard HDMI cable. If you would like to utilize a keyboard and/or mouse, please bring them as well. These will not be supplied.
