Starting a PowerShell User Group: An interview with Gary Barnes

Monday, August 1st, 2016 by June Blender
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to start a PowerShell user group? I did an interview with Gary Barnes, Software Development Engineer in Test, Portland, Oregon, who just started PDX PowerShell (@PDXPoShPUG), a PowerShell user group for Portland, OR, USA, and its suburbs, including Vancouver, WA. He has lots of great insights. ------------------------------------- User groups are an incredible vehicle for learning, whether you're a beginner who needs mentoring and support, an expert who needs to know about cutting edge techniques, or just a diehard who loves to learn. They provide expertise, knowledge, challenges, and the sense of…   More »

What I Learned at IT Pro Camp

Friday, July 1st, 2016 by June Blender
What a free day of learning can do for a community. ------------------------------ You need to meet Sidney Moore. Really. You might know Jeffrey Snover or Bruce Payette or Ed Wilson. But, you need to meet Sidney Moore. Because Sid is one of the most dedicated and passionate advocates for PowerShell learners that I've met. Sid works in IT for Bank of America in Jacksonville, Florida, a hot and humid spot that is, nevertheless, home to a growing IT industry. A few years back, worried that IT operations techs would become obsolete, he dedicated himself not only to learning PowerShell, but…   More »

SAPIEN Loves User Groups

Thursday, January 28th, 2016 by June Blender
Need support for your technical user group? Contact me at Many of us technical types are loners. We tend to be introverts. We prefer our own space. However, when you're learning a completely new skill, like Windows PowerShell, it helps to collaborate. You can read a book and practice on your own. If you hit an obstacle, you can google the problem and copy online solutions. But, it's so much more efficient to talk to people who have been through the learning process, to hear a clear explanation of a solution, to see a demonstration of a new way…   More »

Why Do We Need Constructors?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2015 by June Blender
While traveling after PowerShell Summit Europe in Stockholm, I was honored to be the guest of the Microsoft Technical User Group in Oslo, Norway (@MTUG_Norge). This well-established user group meets on the beautiful campus of the University of Oslo, a short light-rail ride from downtown Oslo. We got together for a hands-on lab on classes in PowerShell 5.0. It was an experienced group -- mainly IT operations folks -- who are well-versed in PowerShell. The concepts are all new, but the group of 35-40 people were quick to understand them. One thoughtful guy asked a particularly good question: Why do…   More »
