End of the World Sale!

It’s a good news, bad news thing. The good news is that the Mayans were apparently great at calculating dates. The bad news is they calculated that the end of the world is December 21, 2012. Yeah, that’s tomorrow! Of course, we don’t believe in such things but, just in case, we are having a blowout sale. On Thursday, December 20, for one day only, you can buy ANYTHING on our online store for 50% off! That includes software, ebooks, and training videos. Don’t forget the Support packages which allow you to contact our tech support team directly and also receive the next major release for free. You get the irony here, right?!…

So, is the calculation correct and/or believable? Here is what we know (and here is where people usually jump to the next paragraph). The date was calculated using the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar which is a non-repeating, vigesimal (base-20) and base-18 calendar used by several Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures, most notably the Maya. The Maya believed that creation of the world took place on August 11, 3114 B.C. in the Gregorian calendar. Using a modified vigesimal tally, the Long Count calendar identifies a day by counting the number of days passed since the creation of the world. December 21, 2012, is the end-date of the 5,125-year-long cycle that began with the creation of the world. It is also the end of the Mayan calendar after which, supposedly, catastrophe ensues. But look at the bright side—a new age of humanity is supposed to begin, an age of enlightenment, both spiritually and intellectually, where PowerShell is widely used and SAPIEN Technologies has software in every home.
